The Weeknd – Thursday
by JUICE on Monday, 22nd August 2011Abel Tesfaye is back with the middle chapter of his mixtape trilogy with a new downloadable offering called Thursday. The 21-year-old Toronto-based r’n'b crooner has been a breath of fresh air within a tired urban scene as his previous offering House Of Balloons proves and despite the man’s clandestine tendencies, The Weeknd’s become a very big deal in very short span. Thursday features more of the same sexed-up lyrics and punch-drunk atmospherics that we’ve all come to love so go on to his official website to get why Thursdays and the new Fridays (sorry, Rebecca Black). Check out the title track (featuring Drake) below.
Twin Sister – “Bad Street”
by JUICE on Wednesday, 10th August 2011Before their debut LP In Heaven comes our way in September, Brooklyn’s Twin Sister are shopping around the classy funk-pop of first single “Bad Street”. Here it is with accompanying video, shot at frontwoman Andrea Estella’s Long Island ‘hood amidst a full-blown fiesta, in an apparent tribute to one of the worlds that have shaped the band’s sound. Get into it.
Oh Land – “White Nights”
by JUICE on Wednesday, 10th August 2011You may have seen Oh Land’s previous balloon-strewn video for her catchy single “White Nights” but this new, more elaborate version undoubtedly does a better job of visualising those dreams under her pillow. Watch our lovely Danish songstress as she keeps following her sirens into increasingly whimsical dance numbers that are as bizarre as they are utterly adorable. Aboriginal headdresses, animal-masked drummers and Oh Land looking like the prettiest fairy in fairy-land, what’s not to love?
Toro Y Moi – “How I Know”

by JUICE on Friday, 5th August 2011Björk – “Crystalline”
by JUICE on Tuesday, 26th July 2011
Much like the cratered planet in Björk’s new music video for “Crystalline”, your eyes better prepare to be bombarded with psychedelic lasers and surreal rippling crystals that could probably make you test positive for LSD. This acid trip of a clip is directed by frequent Björk collaborator Michel Gondry for the lead single taken off the Icelandic songstress’ new album/multimedia project Biophilia. Who need hallucinogens when you have Björk’s holographic floating head singing to you right?
Beastie Boys – “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win”
by JUICE on Thursday, 21st July 2011
We don’t have to tell you what kind of magic happens when Spike Jonze and Beastie Boys team up. One only needs to look at the music videos for “Sabotage” and “Sure Shot” (among many other collabs) for evidence of their collective genius and wacky sense of humour. This time their Santigold featured track, “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win”, gets the Jonze treatment and its an 11-minute action figure epic that adds a glorious new chapter to The Continuously Ill Adventures of the Beastie Boys. Its a bit like Robot Chicken meets Team America meets Night Of The Living Dead and we haven’t even mentioned the part where a yeti battles a zombie army. Playing with toys hasn’t been this much fun in a while.
Washed Out – Within and Without
by JUICE on Friday, 8th July 2011
Chillwave may no longer be a thing, but then again, it was just a thing. And Ernest Greene, commonly known as Washed Out, ain’t hanging on to the label. Having spent the past two years mucking around his bedroom making lo-fi hip-pop melodies and causing quite the stir in the music blogging community, dude has lately landed a record deal with Sub Pop and has a debut LP on the way. It’s called Within and Without, and put Ernest’s every warm texture and whispery effect to good use on nine atmospheric lullabies that’ll put you right in the heart of his bedroom. Don’t believe? Then cop a stream of the album below (only available for the next three days so do it fast… AND IT’S GONE!) and see if 1986 isn’t just around the corner.
Dillon Francis Feat. Diplo & Maluca – “Que Que”
by JUICE on Thursday, 7th July 2011Welcome to the summer of Moombahton folks. And it seems Mad Decent has jumped in where the action is because Dillon Francis’ new cut with Diplo and Maluca entitled “Que Que” is a 108bpm ruckus that just doesn’t stop. As if the actual track wasn’t bangin’ nuts enough, it now comes with a crazy video of cross-eyed swagger that’s a little freaky at first, well until that that unbelievable beat kicks in and you stop caring about everything else.
Lana Del Rey – “Kinda Outta Luck”
by JUICE on Monday, 4th July 2011It really is hard not to be smitten by Lizzy Grant aka Lana Del Rey. There’s so much about her to love – that face, that hair, that voice and perhaps most intriguingly, that cinematic approach to her image. She’s described herself as everything from a “gangster Nancy Sinatra” to “the sonic equivalent of a Vincent Gallo film” and she is indeed as advertised. There’s a certain ’50s glamour to her but mixed in with naughty grime. Like an angel with whisky-stained pipes, Lana Del Rey can evoke Spector and Sinatra with equal ease. And the thing is, she doesn’t even have an album or EP out yet, just a few well-produced demos out online and this husky ditty called “Kinda Outta Luck” is one of our favourites.
