Icona Pop releases new lipsticks and music video for Make Up For Ever

While widely known for its incredibly lasting pigments (in every hue possible) and professional grade theatrical makeup offerings, Make Up For Ever is not one to bang out cross-industry collaborations on the regular. But when it does, you can be sure it’s nothing short of stellar. Coming off its team-up with Charli XCX a couple of months ago, the brand continues its winning streak with yet another power partnership – this time with Swedish duo, Icona Pop.

Joining forces to put out Make Up For Ever’s latest Artist Rouge collection – which consists of 46 lippies in creme and matte textures – Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo put their signature on two limited edition lipsticks (Midnight and Hot Red) and created a brand new video for 2015 single, “Emergency”. We chat to the exuberant two to find out more behind the collaboration and what to expect next.

Hi ladies, why did you embark on this collaboration with Make Up For Ever?

Well, we can’t separate our music from the other stuff that we do – everything goes hand in hand, which makes it more interesting. That said, we are very careful with the kind of collaborations we take on. This one with Make Up For Ever was a no-brainer because the whole thing just goes so well with our music. The Artist Rouge collection is all about daring to be bold and that notion fits us perfectly.

What do you like about Make Up For Ever?

Makeup is so important for us when we are on stage, to do something fun for the audience. We express ourselves through music and also through how we dress and wear makeup. We’ve been using Make Up For Ever for a while now. The products are bold and incredibly long-lasting; it’s perfect for performers like us. We also love using it every day. Mostly, we dig the brand because it’s edgy and cool, plus there are so many different colours to play with.

How did you decide on the colours for the collaboration?

Caroline: I’ve always been a big fan of red lips; it’s classic and bold. That’s why I chose the M-401, a velvety matte rich red hue.

Aino: I love to play with dark sultry shades and I wanted to try something new and different. I’m really loving the creamy blue C-603 colour. Blue is so this-season!

Tell us more about your personal style.

It’s all about the mood and how we feel. Sometimes we want to feel laidback and natural, sometimes we go for the glamour. Also, we love the fact that we can go crazy on stage and do crazy stuff. We like brands like Givenchy and Alexander Wang, but we really love supporting rising designers who have small collections. They work very hard and often have very refreshing pieces.

What is your favourite Fall/Winter 2016 trend?

We’re big lipstick fans. Lipstick is such an easy way to change up any look. For a more natural look, you can go with a nude shade, or instantly make your look bolder with a bright pop of colour. There are so many options for both on and off stage. We also love highlighters; we finally learnt to use it the right way and it’s changed our lives forever.

Who are your style icons?

Some of our style icons are Prince, David Bowie and Patti Smith. We also get a lot of inspiration from our mums and from travelling all around the world.

You’ve just dropped a new track, “Brightside”. What is that about?

It’s a song about our friendship and how we support each other when one is a little down. It’s about the things you do for someone that you are really close to.

Lastly, tell us one thing we don’t but should know about Icona Pop.

Well, we are taking our first steps into acting doing voice-over, which is super fun. Stay tuned!

Priced at $35 each, the Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Collection is available at Sephora and Make Up For Ever Pro Loft.
