ALL THAT GLIMMERS
Jewellery design isn’t just about the shiny stuff. For Matthew Campbell Laurenza, it’s also a fine art. And his eponymous jewellery line, M.C.L. founded in 2007, sure does represent. Bohemian-luxe is its direction, so while M.C.L’s jewels glimmer in all the right angles, they also happen intricately designed, flamboyant, exotic and expressive in every way. The label’s Spring/Summer ’10 collection is already in-store, lining up more vibrant colours and sculpted chic. We got Matthew to fill us in on the rest…
Where did you get the idea to meld the bohemian with the luxe?
Um, it just seems natural to me. I’m a maximalist so it’s just natural for me to take a lot of definition and put it with real stuff.
Have you noticed who’s the M.C.L man or woman?
Well, the funny thing is that I get 18 to 80-year-old women and I get men who are businessmen as well as fashionable ones. I believe that people are buying M.C.L just because they like it, or it’s caught their eye and speaks to them in some way. The collection is very large – over 3,000 silhouettes for women and 80 for men – so there’s something there for everybody.
And your future plans for the brand…
My future intentions are to move it into a more lifestyle brand to encompass fashion and house works. It seems that as our fanbase builds, people are asking for things that are not just what they want to wear but what they want to live with.
