LITTLE MISS SPACEY
Signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, she caught our attention at the Red Bull Music Academy in London last February with her forward sound selection and ability to make good “spacey soulful electro hip hop beats” – in her own words. And we’d bet by now, she has caught yours too. Sparing us some time from her busy schedule , Los Angeles-based producer and DJ Jennifer Lee, who goes by the artist name, TOKiMONSTA, tells what’s cooking for her and those fingers.
As a music lover in your younger days, would you have ever imagined yourself being this involved in music?
I had no idea this would happen. Even when I began creating music as a hobby, it was something I did purely for personal enjoyment. It had not occurred to me that there could be others that would want to hear what I had to offer.
How important do you think L.A. is in influencing and defining your musical direction?
Incredibly important. The music culture here is unique and special. LA has been at the forefront of several music cultures and I’m glad to be apart of the scene emerging right now.
What do you think makes Brainfeeder unique as a music label?
The label is unique because of the diversity of each of the artists. It’s a label full of people who want to enlighten people with music.
And what’s a good cure for a hangover after a great night out at a TOKiMONSTA gig? Or we shouldn’t get cured at all?
Hangover from the brain pummeling music? There’s no cure for that. Hangover from the 10 shots of tequila and 8 pints? Try vitamin B, vitamin C, porridge or soup, and LOTS of water.
Shall we end this with a little known fact about Tokimonsta?
I have a minor (maybe more like major) phobia of flying insects.
