WEARING MANY HATS
Canadian singer and songwriter, Emily Haines, wears three hats and they all fit really well – one as the vocalist and songwriter for Canadian indie rock band, Metric; the other as a close collaborator of art rock outfit, Broken Social Scene; and the last as a solo artist with her band, Emily Haines And The Soft Skeleton. Running along that golden path, she has also claimed a lifetime worth of awards, built a massive fan base thanks to her mad musical talent, and of course, learnt to bake a cake. Here’s more to tell.
Metric, Broken Social Scene and Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton – it must be tough balancing three separate roles in three different musical outfits?
I know it looks difficult on paper, but somehow there has always been a natural balance between the various projects that I am working on and my main focus, which is Metric.
We see you have also lent your vocals to a couple of electronic music productions as well through the years. How different is that from your usual fare of musical work?
When considering collaborations, I’m most drawn to artists making music that doesn’t resemble my own. I like writing characters into songs that exist in a different world than the one I live in.
Are you much of an electronic music fan yourself?
Boards Of Canada and Tim Hecker – that’s my speed. I think Radiohead did the rock world a favour when they made Amnesiac.
What are you most proud of this moment?
My baking skills!
Can you still remember how you felt when your first piece of music was published?
Yes. I try to keep that feeling with me all the time.
So what’s next for Emily Haines?
Well, I won’t say for now. But…expect surprises!
