Skream & Benga at Zirca
by JUICE on Sunday, 8th January 2012Singapore’s played host to a multitude of d’n’b, house, trace, techno and hip hop legends in recent years, but it’s always seemed peculiar that there’s never been many true blue dubstep legends (only Kode9 comes to mind) to grace our shores and decks. Well, that’s all about to change because Zirca’s bringing in not one, but two (!) bona fide UK greats to their stomping grounds. It’s a huge milestone in our club scene and damn, we’re already there.
Skream and Benga are notable for being the godfathers of dubstep in the early-‘00s and their contributions to the UK bass culture has been astronomical. Even at their young age (both are 25), their status as pioneers cannot be overstated, and it’s a testament to their vision that their attempt to carve out a spot in the grime and garage establishment has snowballed into monster-sized proportions. Both are also famed as part of super-trio Magnetic Man (along with Artwork) that’s been revolutionist and in scope and sound. So from the old-school massiveness to the new school magnetism, this show’s undoubtedly going to scorch minds. Strap in!
JUICE is proud to be the official magazine of Skream & Benga at Zirca.
Skream & Benga drops in to drop epicness upon Zirca on Saturday, 13 January. Kiat and Brandon Tay of Syndicate opens.
Best of all, we have 5 pairs of tickets to giveaway to you bassheads. Just email grabs@juice.com.sg with your full name, NRIC and contact number to stand a chance to win!
The People’s Party 2012
by JUICE on Saturday, 7th January 2012The people of Singapore have spoken and if it’s music they want, it’s music they’ll surely get. So here comes The People’s Party to meet those demands with a two-day extravaganza starring the musical crème of the local, regional and international crop. FYI, the event has been a hit with Hong Kong audiences ever since 2009 when it first descended upon the city, and its debut on these shores will surely have our own party people up in arms.
So make yourself comfortable at the *SCAPE Playspace over this special weekend, where sonic delights await in the form of New Zealand’s leading indie light The Naked & The Famous, pop-inclined goodness by The Jezabels and the psychedelic sounds of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. And there’s no way we’re missing out on the twin headliners: Bombay Bicycle Club, the UK quartet that’s been amassing props on the strength of its alt-pop, as well as Metronomy, another English export that can already lay claim to three solid LPs (The English Riviera is its newest), one irresistible funk-pop sound and a Mercury Prize nomination. Rounding off The People’s Party bill are of course, our musical pride and joys, PlainSunset, In Each Hand a Cutlass and The
Analog Girl, who’ll be individually charming the audience onto their side. It’s the Party you People have been waiting for, so get to it!
The People’s Party happens from 14 to 15 January at the *SCAPE Playhouse at 2 Orchard Link. Tickets are priced at $108 (for one day) and $178 (for both days) and are now on sale at all SISTIC authorised agents.

Scissor Sisters Live in Singapore
by JUICE on Friday, 30th December 2011A little Elton John and a little David Bowie, the genderless and genreless Scissor Sisters have been taking all the best parts of yesteryear dazzle (glam, disco and electroclash) and running with it since their introduction in 2003. After first breaking big with a colourful cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”, the band has since signed with Polydor and won over plenty on the strength of their neon wit and transgressive stage performances. Expect the same kind of psychedelia and theatricality when they hit up Fort Canning!
Scissor Sisters tear up Fort Canning Park on Monday 9 January. Ticketing details can be found here.
