Her art boutique concept, The Cotton Candy Machine, will also be getting comfy as a popup store on Peek!’sextended retail space on its second floor. Elsewhere, also keep your peepers peeled for Darkroom Army’s resident artist, Phu, whose special collaboration range, “Soviet Rumble”, will see artistic contributions from local urban talents like SBTG, ANTZ, Clogtwo, mindflyer and Z*E*R*O. Every moment here already looks picture-ready, so arm yourself at the Darkroom Army, take aim and shoot straight.

Foo Fighters Live In Singapore

by JUICE on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

The last time Foo Fighters came here for a show was in 1996 in support of Sonic Youth and those of us that missed that momentous occasion (either through age or bad luck) haven’t really gotten over it in the subsequent 16 years. And even for those that did attend the gig that night, rose-tinted nostalgia has them clamouring for just one more chance to relive that moment. A lot has changed since 1996 – line-up shakeups, ascent to worldwide supremacy and the disappearance of Kurt Cobain’s shadow – but what hasn’t changed is Dave Grohl and company’s ability to cram and rock arenas. You no longer have to wait everlong folks, the alternative legends are finally here.

Foo Fighters pack the Padang on Friday, 2 March 2012 courtesy of Lushington and Chugg. Tickets are S$138 (plus S$3 SISTIC fee) and are available from all SISTIC outlets and online now.

A Skylit Drive @ TAB

by JUICE on Wednesday, 18th January 2012

Post-hardcore outfit A Skylit Drive first made a name with 2008’s Wires And The Concept Of Breathing but it wasn’t until their 2009 label debut (released via Fearless Records) Adelphia that commercial success caught up with their talent. The band then unleashed their opus Identity On Fire in 2010, leading to a massive spike in international attention. Lucky for us, Singapore’s next on their hitlist and best of all, the gig comes packaged with Aussie alt-rock standouts For This Cause!

A Skylit Drive hits up TAB on Friday 24 February! Simply write in to grabs@juice.com.sg with your full name, NRIC and contact number to win a pair of tickets to this concert! More info is at www.upsurgeproductions.com.

Soul Clap at Zouk

by JUICE on Sunday, 15th January 2012

This Boston duo had one helluva 2011 with two incredible mix-CDs (one alongside Wolf + Lamb) that succinctly showed-off their crate-digging creativity along with a discerning eclecticism founded upon the refreshingly open-minded philosophy that “house wears many hats”. Elyte and Cnyce’s inclusion at #14 on Resident Advisor’s Best DJs of 2011 list was no accident and when these two boundary-pushing DJs step behind Zouk’s decks to unleash their epic grab-bag of house, disco and classics, you’ll know why.

Give your applause to Soul Clap at Zouk on  Friday 20 January.

SBTRKT at Home Club

by JUICE on Saturday, 14th January 2012

What is it about DJs and their masks? From Daft Punk to Deadmau5, we’ve seen our fair share of disguised men behind the decks and the latest to join that list is English producer Aaron Jerome aka SBTRKT (pronounced as subtract). The first thing that catches your eye is the ornate ceremonial tribal mask that he wears during his sets, but it’s the fidgety and gritty sounds stemming from his Midas touch that truly leave an impression. From his astonishing recordings on Ramp and Young Turks to his standout remixes for Goldie and Basement Jaxx, the enigmatic Jerome has been on a roll.

His sound is a mix of his native Britain (UK Funky, 2-step, dubstep) sweetly woven in with more American influences (Chicago house, urban r’n’b) but what you can always count on from SBTRKT’s intricate tapestry are those fluid beats and gorgeous vocal assists from some of the finest singers around such as Roses Gabor and Little Dragon. And that’s just his recorded magic. A live SBTRKT show is a more dynamic beast, thanks to the presence of Sampha on vox, loops and keyboards. We can’t think of a better place than Home Club to host SBTRKT for his debut show here and with a soundsystem as impeccable as theirs, this one will be a treat.

JUICE is proud to be the official magazine for SBTRKT at Home Club.

Now/Live presents SBTRKT at Home Club on Wednesday 25 January. Tickets are $38 (limited early bird), $45 (advance / at the door) and are available at Home Club or via sbtrkt.eventbrite.com. More details available on Facebook.

Skream & Benga at Zirca

by JUICE on Sunday, 8th January 2012

Singapore’s played host to a multitude of d’n’b, house, trace, techno and hip hop legends in recent years, but it’s always seemed peculiar that there’s never been many true blue dubstep legends (only Kode9 comes to mind) to grace our shores and decks. Well, that’s all about to change because Zirca’s bringing in not one, but two (!) bona fide UK greats to their stomping grounds. It’s a huge milestone in our club scene and damn, we’re already there.

Skream and Benga are notable for being the godfathers of dubstep in the early-‘00s and their contributions to the UK bass culture has been astronomical. Even at their young age (both are 25), their status as pioneers cannot be overstated, and it’s a testament to their vision that their attempt to carve out a spot in the grime and garage establishment has snowballed into monster-sized proportions. Both are also famed as part of super-trio Magnetic Man (along with Artwork) that’s been revolutionist and in scope and sound. So from the old-school massiveness to the new school magnetism, this show’s undoubtedly going to scorch minds. Strap in!

JUICE is proud to be the official magazine of Skream & Benga at Zirca.

Skream & Benga drops in to drop epicness upon Zirca on Saturday, 13 January. Kiat and Brandon Tay of Syndicate opens.

Best of all, we have 5 pairs of tickets to giveaway to you bassheads. Just email grabs@juice.com.sg with your full name, NRIC and contact number to stand a chance to win!

The People’s Party 2012

by JUICE on Saturday, 7th January 2012

The people of Singapore have spoken and if it’s music they want, it’s music they’ll surely get. So here comes The People’s Party to meet those demands with a two-day extravaganza starring the musical crème of the local, regional and international crop. FYI, the event has been a hit with Hong Kong audiences ever since 2009 when it first descended upon the city, and its debut on these shores will surely have our own party people up in arms.

So make yourself comfortable at the *SCAPE Playspace over this special weekend, where sonic delights await in the form of New Zealand’s leading indie light The Naked & The Famous, pop-inclined goodness by The Jezabels and the psychedelic sounds of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. And there’s no way we’re missing out on the twin headliners: Bombay Bicycle Club, the UK quartet that’s been amassing props on the strength of its alt-pop, as well as Metronomy, another English export that can already lay claim to three solid LPs (The English Riviera is its newest), one irresistible funk-pop sound and a Mercury Prize nomination. Rounding off The People’s Party bill are of course, our musical pride and joys, PlainSunset, In Each Hand a Cutlass and The
Analog Girl, who’ll be individually charming the audience onto their side. It’s the Party you People have been waiting for, so get to it!

The People’s Party happens from 14 to 15 January at the *SCAPE Playhouse at 2 Orchard Link. Tickets are priced at $108 (for one day) and $178 (for both days) and are now on sale at all SISTIC authorised agents.
