JUICE June

This month: we snuggle up to André Saraiva, Uffie's hubby who paints and parties with equal fervour, Kaiser Chiefs tell us their secrets (all 25 of them), and Sinden takes us out shopping. We also score a prime spot at the Worldwide Festival and a back seat at the Singapore Fashion Festival. Style-wise, we dig into Lad Musician and the possibilities of denim. And to stem your wanderlust, we've also compiled A Moveable Feast, a guide to Singapore's version of Paris, Tokyo, London and New York, so you don't have to go too far for your dose of foreign cool.

Also, Liam Gallagher tells us this:
"No point having good tunes if you look like a dick, d'you know what I mean? You could write the best songs in the world, but if you look terrible, you're just letting yourself down."

Pick up your copy of JUICE now at any of these spots. It's free and always special.

Emmy The Great

Emmy The Great looks every inch the gamine folkie, but her still waters belie dark and twisted tales. Prone to tunes like "Edward Is Dedward" (where a woman attends her lover's funeral only to end up in bed with his father) and lines like "Every time that I think of you, I have to go to the toilet", the girl has built a steady portfolio juxtaposing her soothe-swaying guitar sound with an unblinking honesty. Sugar and spice, indeed. You can now hear it all on Emmy's debut, First Love, which will charm, shock, make you laugh and break your heart all that once. And well, they don't call her The Great for nothing.

Get First Love at all good record stores.

Jethro Lazenby

with Cole Mohr (on left)

Meet Jethro Lazenby - a 19 year old model from down under who has already appeared on the runway for Balenciaga (Paris Fashion Week), been photographed by Hedi Slimane, and has graced the pages of i-D and Dazed And Confused on a very frequent basis. His dad is also known as Aussie rocker, Nick Cave. This andro looking beast looks set to conquer the fashion world in time to come because he looks like an alien, has a waif-like physique and a very strange haircut. We predict he might form a band soon too.

Hansel

Local womenswear label, Hansel, is a quirky, understated and highly wearable (we hate this term though) collection that suits lasses who are cool, like you. Named after the Jack Russell Terrier belonging to designer, Jo Soh, the label has gotten props from industry players and press from around the world, including us here at JUICE. And we hear even Rose Byrne is into it. Besides being stocked online and other cool stockists, Hansel is now available at Blackmarket. Huzzah.

Blackmarket is located 19 Jalan Pisang (along Victoria Street).

The Dex Romweber Duo + Jack White

In his bid to drop in on every band in America, Jack White has recently joined the ranks of The Dex Romweber Duo. The rockabilly siblings have enlisted the guitar, bass and saw-playing services of White for two tracks, recorded in his Nashville studio. On top of all that, Dex has been a long-time hero of Jack, who refers to Dex as the rock 'n' roll underground's best kept secret, so you can imagine the kind of fun he was having. The 7" single of "Last Kind Word Blues", with a B-side of "The Wind Did Move" is dropping sometime in late May.

More from Jack White will come from The Dead Weather's June debut, Horehound. A White Stripes release is also slated for a 2010 release. The man obviously doesn't sleep much.

Local Sound Art

If you think Singapore's music is somewhat nothing beyond the box, we will prove you wrong. Introducing sound artist, Sonicbrat, who has been doing us proud, but quietly and humbly. Having been influenced largely by the ambient grooves of Brian Eno, Thom Yorke and Kraftwerk, the lad musician has for the past couple of years, shared a perfoming moment with Radiohead at Sziget Festival, performed in various other stints throughout Europe, and of course, was Singapore's representative to the esteemed Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) in Barcelona last year.
He will be performing at SONAR Festival in Barcelona (June 18-20) this year at an arena curated by RBMA so if you're in Spain this summer, please wave a national flag and be proud.

And so it happens again - the JUICE DJ Quest - on June 19 at Zouk. We're pretty excited since its already into its ninth year of existence. And we love our DJs. Staightforward formula: Four finalists to compete in this year's stint, with a theme that states "The Next Dimension" because we want to launch some jock careers into space. We would love for you to either be there as a punter on the dancefloor, or to tweak those knobs and take part.

Julian Plenti

We haven't heard from Interpol in a bit, but the men of Interpol have nonetheless been busy. Carlos has been occupied with his new film composer persona (complete with face hair), Sam has been playing with his band Magnetic Morning, and now, Paul Banks is braving solo waters as Julian Plenti (yes, he's acquired the face hair too). An album, Julian Plenti is... Skyscraper, is slated for an August release, containing songs that Paul has described as "cocky" and "sexy". If the dark and forlorn sample heard on his website is anything to go by, Paul is obviously just bragging. In any case, we love this.

Gossip - "Heavy Cross"

Welcome back the Gossip. In the past two years, their Standing In The Way Of Control has scored a major share of plaudits for its sassy dance-punk, frontwoman Beth has become an icon of femme power and the trio has found itself in the company of Columbia Records. Their first major label album will be Music For Men (produced by Rick Rubin), due out sometime next month. But in the meantime, you can make do with "Heavy Cross", a glorious and crisp four minutes worth of big ass disco. Nice.

Lissy Trullie

She's hip, she's punchy, and she makes a pop sound so loud it borders on punk. And oh, did we mention Lissy Trullie is so very hip? Even Albert Hammond Jr has got nothing on her. Just check out her mushroom haircut + leather jacket combo doing a brilliant re-tooling of Hot Chip's "Ready For The Floor". It's pretty massive and you're welcome to fall hard for it.
