Art: The Boy Who Sees With Stones

Posted January 21st, 2010 at 11:52 am by JUICE

Sound art is no longer about strange bleeps, distorted bass, strangely beautiful visuals and one intelligent bloke behind a console playing god. It stretches beyond wires, buttons, and the cold touch of machinery into a world of dreams and imaginations. Co-presented by Esplanade and brainchild, Sonicbrat, The Boy Who Sees With Stones is project that does just that - creating a story of a boy seeing with his mind (by the use of sound, multimedia art and animation) and achieving it with your help.

Keeping the storyline open, the “collective musing” (as defined by the artists) exercise will use different visual and aural elements to dig deep into our minds and stir up whatever’s disappeared in the process of growing up. Everyone’s invited to contribute their bag of dreams and imaginations lost since young to a “woolgathering” site (www.tbwsws.com) and allow for the collaborating artists to pick the right ones, mix it up with their own, and propel the story into fruition.

The actual performance will be done in a theatrical setting and audiences will be invited to lie down on the floor while sound artists, Sonicbrat and Amberhaze, do the music thing. The duo will present a live electro acoustic set on-site and soundtrack live multi-media art and animation work done by visual artists, Ling Wei (Taiwan), Bird (Taiwan) and Lei (Singapore). All these works should piece together and present an intimate night of nostalgia and story-telling through the truest of hearts and mediums.

The Boy Who Sees With Stones is presented as part of Esplanade’s Huayi festival and happens on the 24 and 25 of February, 7.30pm and 9.30pm, at the Esplanade Recital Studio. Get your tickets at all SISTIC outlets, www.sistic.com.sg and the Esplanade Box Office.
